Insights and tips for homeowners.
Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that can be present in any home. Radon and its products are radioactive, and when inhaled can expose lungs to alpha particle radiation, which can cause lung cancer. Radon exposure is the second cause of lung cancer in the US, behind cigarette smoke. While there are statewide estimated averages for radon risk, each home is unique. The Wake County average is near the recommended level for human safety – any given home in the area may be well above the average, and the EPA and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services both recommend that every home be tested for radon.
